Some are objectively better.

Warlocks in Baldur’s Gate 3 get their powers by making a pact with a demon. The pact boon is a bonus your patron gives you in addition to the subclass features. You can think of it like a second subclass that gives you access to a unique spell or buff: They add extra skills that further specialize the class depending on your playstyle.

Read on to learn what the best Warlock pact is in BG3.

The Best Warlock Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are three Warlock subclasses in BG3:

  • The Archfey
  • Fiend
  • The Great Old One

Our pick for the best Warlock subclass is The Fiend. The ability to temporarily gain four health after every kill is handy. It might not sound like much, but it adds up when you’re plowing through multiple enemies. The Great Old One is the next best, followed by The Archfey. The extra curveball they throw at enemies can make a world of difference, but in the long run, they lose out to The Fiend.

The Great Old One afflicts enemies with Mortal Reminder whenever a critical hit lands, frightening them for one turn unless they successfully roll a Wisdom Saving Throw. Archfey can use Fey Presence to charm or frighten enemies. The Fiend has access to spells like Burning Hands and Command, but they also get the feat Dark One’s Blessings, which allows them to temporarily gain health whenever they kill an enemy.

Here is our ranking for each warlock pact and boon in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Which Warlock Pact is the Best in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Pact of the Blade

The best Warlock Pact is Pact of the Blade, especially when paired with The Fiend subclass. It will finish off weakened enemies for you and help you rack up temporary health points. You gain access to an extra attack at level 5. Overall, the Pact of the Blade allows for a great experience for new Warlock players.

Tip:

You can either summon a pact weapon or make any existing weapon a pact weapon.

Pact of the Tome

The Pact of the Tome meshes exceptionally well with The Archfey subclass, offering a captivating exploration of the Warlock’s intriguing facets. This pact grants access to three spells: Guidance, an irresistible cantrip, bestows a bonus to ability checks. Vicious Mockery, which weakens an enemy’s next attack, and Thorn Whip, which inflicts piercing damage while pulling smaller foes closer.

Tip:

You can cast each of these spells once per short rest.

Pact of the Chain

Pact of the Chain compliments The Great Old One subclass. Mortal Reminder’s frightening effect will stop enemies in their tracks every critical hit, allowing the fey spirit to wreak havoc. This pact introduces a familiar to perform certain tasks, enhances the impact of your critical hits, and provides an extra attack at level five. It’s worth exploring but falls slightly short of the other two options.

Tip:

The Imp familiar does more damage than the Quasit.

Warlock is a versatile class. It’s a little harder to play than the best starting classes, but it pairs well with others via multiclassing. As expected, Sorcerer is an excellent choice.

All Warlock pacts in BG3, summarized

Pact
Pact of the BladeYou will be able to make a pact with a pact weapon or turn one of your existing weapons into a pact weapon. These weapons will always return to you when thrown and scales with Charisma instead of Dexterity and Strength. You will gain proficiency with the buffed pact weapon. This weapon could be used at close range, however, it offers a ranged option as well.
Pact of the TomeThis pact offers an array of free spells which are Guidance, Vicious Mockery and Thorn Whip.Adding spells to your Warlock’s arsenal is always useful since the spell list is already slim.
Pact of the ChainSummoning a familiar, Pact of Tome aids you in wreaking ranged havoc across the battlefield. It buffs critical hits, gains Extra Attack and level five and adds an ally during a fight. The more, the merrier. On the battlefield, having this extra summon can turn the tides of any fight.
  • The best Warlock pact in BG3 is Pact of the Blades. Pact of the Chain lacks the versatility of all three pacts, and Pact of the Tome only provides extra spells.
  • Pact of the Blade allows you to make a pact with any weapon, throwing it at enemies, gaining temporary health points and not to mention, it scales with Charisma.

Overall, the pacts add extra abilities to the Warlock class which is like adding an extra subclass, making the Warlock a very dynamic class. Pact of the Blades, however, is the best Warlock pact in BG3.
